Asbestos may have been banned in the 1970s, but that doesn’t mean it has disappeared. It’s still in many homes and commercial properties built between 1930 and 1950. When asbestos flooring needs to be replaced, install flooring overtop of it, but don’t remove it yourself. Hire an asbestos abatement professional before considering removing any contaminated material.
Asbestos is particularly dangerous when jostled and moved around during a renovation or reconstruction. Particles and fibres can become airborn and long-term exposure to asbestos through inhalation can cause deadly cancers. The risk of cancer increases with each fibre inhaled and symptoms may not be revealed for 20 years. Asbestos is difficult for the body to process or expel. Asbestosis, a condition affecting the lungs, can cause shortness of breath, coughing, chest tightening, loss of appetite and scarring of the lungs.
Because of the health risks, especially when processing asbestos, federal regulations were enacted years ago to limit its use. The provincial government regulates the removal and disposal of asbestos. Don’t try to remove the material yourself and risk exposure to a toxic material. R.C.
